Driving Techniques That Improve Your Vehicle’s MPG | Charlie Clark Nissan Harlingen Blog

There is no doubt that events in the US since the turn of 2020 have been far from the norm, and for many of us it’s been a case of taking a financial hit. Although we are now hopefully on the road to recovery, it’s important for most people that they find ways to cut down on the amount of money they spend.

One way you can cut down on your spending is to adopt better driving techniques. The more effectively you drive, the less fuel you will use. This means fewer trips to the gas station and less spending on fuel.

Here are some top tips you ought to follow if you want to lower your vehicle’s MPG.

INFOGRAPHIC: Simple things can be amazing

Drive Passively, not Aggressively

Most journeys are about getting from point A to point B safely. Sometimes there are time constraints, but if you plan your journey well and give yourself plenty of time, then there should be no reason to rush.

A journey is not an adrenalin-filled NASCAR event. If you are accelerating up full speed at every opportunity and braking sharply at the last second, then all you are doing is burning fuel for the sake of it. An aggressive driver typically burns between 10 and 15 percent more fuel per trip than a passive one.

Aggressive drivers are also more likely to cause fender benders than passive drivers. This could mean repair bills, higher insurance premiums and even additional legal costs.

The Slower You Drive, the Less Fuel You Use

Many people consider the speed limit set on highways to be a challenge – to see how far they can creep above it without alerting the attention of law enforcement agencies. If this describes you, then you are paying a premium for your ‘daring’ ways.

Most cars are built so that they achieve maximum fuel efficiency at between 40 and 50 mph. The faster you go beyond that point, the more fuel you will burn – driving at a consistent 80 mph for example will drop your vehicle’s fuel economy by between 10 and 15 percent.

Naturally, on some roads you may incur the wrath of your fellow road users if you are creeping along at 50 mph, but if you stay within the speed limit (and therefore remain lawful!) as opposed to sitting 5-10 mph above it, you will save fuel and therefore money.

Pack Light

The lighter your vehicle is on the road, the better its fuel economy. We are not suggesting you go on a diet here, but if you typically haul around items in your vehicle that you only need on rare occasions, then you are wasting money. Every 100 pounds that you carry in your vehicle reduces your fuel economy by one to two percent.

A roof-top box on your vehicle is a great and convenient way to haul cargo, but if you leave the roof-top box on your vehicle’s roof when it is empty or not needed, then you are severely reducing the fuel economy of your vehicle for no reason whatsoever. The ‘drag factor’ of the box can reduce the MPG-rating of your car by as much as 25 percent on the interstate. The best policy therefore is to remove your roof-top box when it is not required or invest in a rear-mounted cargo box or tray instead.

Why Owning a Car Early Can Save You Money And Be Better For Your Livelihood | Charlie Clark Nissan Harlingen

Car ownership among young people around the world has been falling at record levels over the past ten years. Take the UK for example - in the 1990s around 50 percent of people between the ages of 17 and 20 had a driving license. By 2018 that ratio had fallen to 33 percent.

The US has a very different relationship with cars than most other countries, including the UK. Much of the human-created geography of the US is structured so that getting around without some kind of personal transportation is practically impossible. The number of households that have access to a vehicle has remained steady at around 93 percent for the past decade.

There are fears though that millennials in the US may start to follow the trends set by their cousins across the pond, and that car ownership among the young in the US may start to falter. Here then are some very good reasons why car ownership is something anyone should seriously consider as soon as they are old enough to learn how to drive.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 15, 2014) Ð U.S. Department of Transportation statistics show cell phones are involved in 1.6 million auto crashes each year. These crashes cause a half-million injuries and take 6,000 lives annually. To help raise the visibility of this critical issue, Nissan has partnered with NBC Universal and Adam Levine to promote ÒRed Thumb DayÓ Ð inspired by ÒRed Thumb Reminder,Ó a program created by Steve Babcock of EVB advertising. Marking your thumb serves as an important reminder to not text and drive.

Express Your Independence

Learning to drive and owning your first car has always been seen as a rite of passage in the US, and rightly so. As children start to approach the end of their teens, they will want to explore the world on their own terms and not be thwarted by the availability of their parents, and the limitations of public transport. Home will always be home, but a whole world of destinations opens up to anyone as soon as they take possession of the keys to their first, privately-owned vehicle.

Have More Time to Do What You Want

Getting from Point A to Point B in a car is relatively simple. You get in your car at Point A, then drive it to Point B, and then you get out again. The biggest issue you may face is finding some place to park your car at Point B, but that’s about it.

Compare that to public transport. There may not be a bus or train stop at Point A or Point B, so you’ll have to walk to get there. You may also have to spend time planning the logistics around your day, as you cannot simply summon a bus or train at will (there are cabs and Ubers of course, but they are much more expensive). Then there’s the journey itself – full of stops as passengers get on and get off. Typically, the same journey by public transport takes at least two and a half times as long than via a vehicle – is that time you can afford to waste?

Owning a Car Will Save You Money in the Long Run

Purchasing or leasing a car may not be cheap, and keeping it running costs more than a few cents, but car ownership is significantly cheaper than alternative transport options. Every cent you spend on public transport is a cent lost, but as long as you keep your vehicle in a reasonable condition, it will retain a good percentage of its value when the time comes to upgrade.

Mile-for-mile, a car is also the cheapest means of travel when compared to public transport (two to three times more expensive) and private transport (twenty to thirty times more expensive).

If you are looking for a vehicle at any age, then head down to the Charlie Clark Nissan showroom that serves the Harlingen and McAllen areas. All You Need to Know About Installing an EV Home Charger | Charlie Clark Nissan Harlingen

Not only are EVs the correct choice if you’re interested in helping out with making us all more environmentally friendly, they offer the convenience of being able to ‘fuel up’ at home. That’s something that’s never been available before – few people have their own, personal gas station!

One thing that puts people off from the installation of an EV home charger is the cost. To get an electrician out to install your charging station can be expensive. Happily, there are ways of installing an EV home charger yourself, and here we are going to go over the process.

The Main Issue With an EV Home Charger Installation is Your Home’s Electrical Supply

Before we describe how you can install an EV home charger, there is one hurdle that you have no choice but to get over. The amount of electricity we consume has risen substantially over the past twenty years or so. Most homes now have countless electrical devices from appliances and TVs to charging stations for mobile devices, gaming systems and computers. That’s a lot of power that is being guzzled.

Older homes often have around 100 amps of available service, which was more than adequate at the turn of the millennium. If your home has countless electrical devices already, installing an EV home charger could crank you over that 100 amp limit which will cause issues.

The answer then is to increase your home’s capacity, but that’s easier said than done. You may fall foul of local limits which are set for safety reasons so not to overburden your area’s electrical supply system. Also, increasing your home’s capacity is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

So, you will need first to check your home’s available supply and if it’s around 100 amps or lower, you’ll need to get advice from a qualified electrician.

The all-new 2018 Nissan LEAF sets a new standard in the growing market for mainstream electric vehicles by offering customers greater range, advanced technologies and a dynamic new design.

Installing a Level One Charger – Ideal if You Don’t Drive Over 40 Miles Every Day

If your daily EV mileage is under 50 miles per day, then you’ll be fine with a level one charger which is basically a trickle charger which delivers 12 amps, which is probably less than what your dryer uses. Just plug the charger into a convenient outlet once you get home from your last usage of your EV of the day, and leave it running overnight.

Eight hours of charging at level one will be enough to deliver you around 40 miles of charge. If you drive more than 40 miles per day than that charge will be enough to get you to a speedier charging point.

Nissan LEAF was introduced in December 2010, as the world's first affordable, zero emission car for the mass market. With that formula, consumer adoption has taken off, making LEAF the world's best-selling, 100-percent electric vehicle. For 2015, Nissan LEAF continues to make it "easy to be green," offering the space and range to meet everyday needs, while also providing an exceptional value proposition due to zero spending on gas, lower operating and maintenance costs and a starting price after tax incentives competitive with a comparable gas-powered car.

Charger – for People Who Drive More Than 40 Miles Per Day

Level two chargers run twice as fast and supply twice the voltage as a level one charger. Some level two chargers can supply even more power, up to 80 amps, but these may place too much strain on your home’s electrical system. Most EVs don’t need that much power anyhow – a 40 amp circuit is more than enough for even the most powerful EV. An overnight charge will add over 100 miles to your current driving range.

The best thing you can do when installing a home EV charger is to get advice, and from a professional. Electricity can of course be deadly, so it’s not something to be dealt with in a casual, haphazard manner.

If you are in the market for an EV, make sure you check out what’s available at the Charlie Clark Nissan Showroom in Harlingen. We can always be contacted at (956) 423-6975 or online through our contact form.

Ways of Owning an EV (Electric Vehicle) for Apartment Dwellers | Charlie Clark Nissan Harlingen Blog

There are plenty of benefits associated with owning an EV, and as gas-powered vehicles are slowly phased out, eventually if you own an automobile, it will be an EV. Not only are EVs much better for the health of our planet, they offer plenty of convenience too as, unlike gas-powered vehicles, they can be ‘powered up’ at home.

But not everyone has the option of charging their EV at home, as not everyone owns a house with a convenient parking and charging location. Plenty of people live in apartments and condominiums and have to park their vehicle wherever they can find a parking place. This dissuades such people from owning an EV, as they can only charge their vehicle at places that could be miles from where they live, and there’s always the risk of their EV running out of charge as they journey to the nearest convenient charging station.

So, this begs the question – what are the most convenient ways of owning an EV for apartment dwellers where a charging station or docking point cannot be arranged?

The Government is Looking at Ways of Making EV Charging Station Installation Easier

The good news for apartment dwellers who wish to own an EV is that your government is already thinking of you. The best way to encourage the use of EVs is for multi-unit dwellings such as an apartment block to have designated parking spots, some of which will have EV charging stations. Laws have been passed and legislation is being considered to make it easier for building owners to install EV charging statuibs. Indeed, some laws may make it a necessity that any multi-unit dwelling has at least the potential and ability for charging stations to be installed.

Of course, you may think that the obvious solution is for an apartment owner to apply to be allocated a dedicated parking place, and then pay for the installation of an EV charging point themselves. That, however, comes with another heap of issues. Apartment ownership is much more fleeting than home ownership. What happens if a tenant pays for a dedicated parking place and the installation of a charging point and then – due to a change of circumstances – is forced to move out six months later?

An Apartment Building with EV Charging Stations will Make it More Attractive to Potential Tenants

The onus, therefore, as many people argue, is for building owners to install charging stations. When it comes to getting their apartment rented, having dedicated parking spots and EV charging stations makes rental more attractive to potential tenants. Low-level charging stations are not actually that expensive to install, and an EV left to charge overnight at even a low-level charging station should have enough power come the morning to get any EV owner to any fast charging station within a 100 mile radius.

Of course, multi-unit dwelling does not always mean that a single person owns the entire unit and then rents out each individual apartment. Often tenants each own their individual apartment and then have shared ownership of the unit. In situations like this, the installation of a charging station becomes a little more complicated as the cost of installation is usually seen as a group expense, and not an individual one. However, if the installation is seen as a benefit to the whole group for the attraction of future owners and not just the owner of the EV who desires the installation, then agreements can be reached.

The new 2019 Nissan LEAF e+ has a 62 kWh battery pack and an EPA-estimated range of up to 226 miles. Sales in the U.S. are expected to begin in spring 2019.

Why the Nissan Rogue Stands Above the Toyota Rav4 | Charlie Clark Nissan Harlingen

There has never been a time in US automobile purchasing history like the present day when it comes to the popularity of compact SUVs. Sport-utility vehicles offer a compact yet spacious size, comfort and versatility, all of which makes them supremely popular. Companies such as Nissan, Ford and Toyota are always keen to gain as much of the market share as they can when it comes to this important vehicle niche.

As we reach the end of 2020 the new model year commences and two of the US’s leading vehicle manufacturers – Nissan and Toyota – have released new versions of their best-selling SUVs. For Nissan it’s the Rogue and for Toyota it’s the RAV4 Prime. These vehicles each year go neck-and-neck for the number one spot in the list of premier SUVs and 2021 is not going to be any different. One vehicle though has to take that number one spot – the question is, which?

The 2021 Version of the Nissan Rogue is Adequately Designed to Turn Heads

People who claimed that the 2020 version of the Rogue was too “cute” are likely to be satisfied by the stylistic changes made to the 2021 model which has a more dynamic design. The dramatic front end has the distinctive Nissan-style LED headlights, and the vehicle sits 0.2 inches closer to the road. It is also one and a half inches shorter.

Inside, the new Rogue offers a stylish, comfortable ride for both driver and passengers, complete with an electronic shifter as opposed to a bulky mechanical one. This makes more storage space available up front, which is something in common with the rest of the vehicle. To add to the comfort the Rogue’s console has Google Maps, Waze and wireless Apple CarPlay, and to add to the convenience a wireless smartphone charger and USB charging ports.

The Rogue has a 2.5-liter DOHC direct-injection 4-cylinder engine that provides 181hp and an estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg.

Toyota’s RAV4 in 2021 May Disappoint Those Who Were Expecting a Little Bit More

Like the 2021 Rogue, the new RAV4 has been made to look a little more aggressive, with the vehicle’s front end being made to look more like a truck than a traditional SUV. Approach the RAV4 from the front and you’ll be impressed by the extended overhang and typically Toyota-look grille.

The 2021 RAV4’s interior makes even the base model look like a luxurious one. Drivers will appreciate the finely-tuned driving position and the intuitive controls. Just like the Rogue there is plenty of storage space and easy-folding seats for when transporting more than just passengers. The infotainment and display aspects of the 2021 RAV4 are a little disappointing though when compared to the Rogue.

The RAV4 has a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine combined with all-wheel-drive electric motors. Electric power is provided by a lithium-ion battery pack but with a driving range of only 40 miles.

While there seems little to choose between these two popular SUVs it seems likely that most people would favor the 2021 version of the Nissan Rogue over the same model year of the Toyota RAV4. In terms of performance there is little difference between them, but if you want the more comfortable drive then it’s got to be the Rogue. The Rogue also has a deceptively stellar amount of storage space which of course adds to its versatility.

The Rogue is also the better-looking vehicle of the two, with the SV trim perhaps being the version to go for if you want to turn the heads of the people that you drive past.
